Girls Who Walk Aberdeen

When I first arrived in Aberdeen I was introduced to Girls Who Walk Aberdeen where women from around Aberdeen and sometimes outside of Aberdeen come together for walks as well as different diverse activities and events. So far, I’ve gone on one walk and attended two events. It’s a great way to meet people in a fun and informal way. I’ve met some really amazing women and sometimes following the event we end up grabbing a drink or coffee.

They provide a range of events from wine & cheese pairings, ceramic and painting events along with walks at local parks. They even have a holiday ball scheduled for December with a Bridgerton theme. As I mentioned, I have attended two events and one walk; ceramic painting and a pots & pints event and not that kind of pot!

A Night of Ceramics & Cronuts

The ceramic event was held in an area of Aberdeen that has artist studios and the woman had just recently opened up her space and she shared that she’s also a nurse. The pandemic made her re-evaluate her life and she decided to open a ceramic studio as it was one of her passions. She did share that she is still a nurse. I’ve actually met a couple of nurses through this group. Not only did I meet people but got introduced to a new sweet treat – a cronut! It’s a combo of a croissant and donut and it was delicious.

We got to pick our ceramic item to paint and of course I picked a highland coo planter. I think I did a damn good job and it’s too pretty for a plant. What do you think?

Pots & Pints!

My most recent event was Pots & Pints at BrewDog and this included picking out a succulent plant and a small planter to paint. It also included a beverage. A woman that had been at the ceramic and walk was also there, and I got to meet a couple of new people including a fellow University of Aberdeen student from Canada. Where I found out that their exchange rate is even worse than the U.S., which I didn’t think was possible. Actually ended up painting two planters as they are tiny. So, I guess I’m going to have to buy another plant for it. Luckily, I’ve found a great plant shop pretty close to my flat.

So, after the event ended a couple of us ended up staying for some food and drinks. What’s been great about this group is that it’s a very welcoming environment where you don’t need to know anyone to attend the walks or activities. We all seem to be professionals or students looking to have some fun in good company of others.

One of the women I’ve met, drives ships for BP Oil and is out on a ship 3 months at a time. She’s been to Turkey, China, Africa as well as the Suez Canal and hoping to go through the Panama Canal. It’s been fascinating to hear her talk about her job and I should mention that she’s pretty young. Driving ships was her plan A and B for a career and that at first she didn’t think it was possible. She shared that she happened to be on a ship and noticed a woman on the ship and started talking to her and the rest is history. Not sure if I will see her at the next activity as she mentioned that she thinks she’ll be headed out soon.

Hoping to join a walk in the near future and keeping my eye out for their next event.
