I’m entering week 4 of my studies and still working out my classwork schedule. Don’t worry I’m getting my work done but I’m just trying to find the balance.
What I like about the University is the system they use for classwork and assessments. Although, it could be approved upon as they have MyAberdeen for classes. MyTimetable for your class schedule and MyCurriculum for class registration. You primarily use MyAberdeen as this is where all your courses are along with weekly coursework and assessments. This is how I keep track of my work and plan for my week. Please note that my primary courses are Intro to Business Consulting, Ops & Project Management, Psychology at Work and Organisational Culture and Conflict.

The class that I have found will be my biggest challenge is Ops & Project Management as it is a lot of prep ahead of the class and the teacher seems to release the content for the class a couple days before class. It is an interesting class but it is a lot of information to absorb. I do like that he has pre-recorded slides prior to class that he then covers in class. In addition, there is also reading for the class – ugh! He’s also the teacher that has the thick Scottish accent and at times during class talks very fast. He also likes to walk around while teaching, which can make it difficult to understand him at times. In addition, when he uses an example, he seems to like to use the U.S. and always points me out with where’s my American. Although at this point he now knows who I am. Although not to hard to find me in the class as we all sit in the same area. This is also a 3-hour class followed by my psychology class.
As for my psychology classes, I wish they were longer. They are only an hour and by the time we really get into the discussion, we need to wrap up so the next class can use the room. I do find the content really interesting and can always reflect back on my past work experience. We also had our first graded assignment although pretty small percentage of the grade. We had to post in the discussion section about the layers of culture within an organisation. What I enjoy most about my psychology classes is learning how to connect it to project management and consulting and understanding human nature and how it can impact things.
For this week’s Intro to Business Consulting, we had a guest lecture who works for a UK based firm Compare the Market, which is a company that helps consumers compare different markets for the best price (car insurance, home insurance, mortgages, etc.). She gave us an activity to complete for part two of the lecture that took place later in the week. We were put into pairs and had to help solve a problem and pitch it. We were assigned the activity Monday afternoon and the pitch was Wednesday afternoon. So, not a lot of time to plan something, but it was completed and I think we did ok. Next week, we have a site visit at the Aberdeen Football Club as well as our first graded assessment. Wish me luck!
So, as I continue to work on my time management of getting my coursework done ahead the class and trying to rewire my brain to retain this information. I really think my biggest hurdle is the reading, especially when it is research based. It’s so wordy – just get to the point.
I’ll keep you updated as I enter assessment prep as well as submitting my first assessment next week.
